Drive
along the shores of the Marmara Sea viewing the
ancient City Walls. See the Castle of the Seven
Towers, the work of Sultan Mehmet the
Conqueror, was originally three-sided addition to
the section of the Byzantine land walls. Stop at
the Rhesium Gate to climb up the walls and have an
overall view. Continue driving to Eyup, in
spite of the fact that it is one of the rare
neighborhoods which still retains some Ottoman
characteristics. See the rarely visited Eyup
Mosque, the holiest mosque in Turkey. See the
Ottoman cemetery with its unique tombstones that
speak from centuries past. Move to see the
monastic Chora Church, which offers the
best examples of the so-called Byzantine
‘Renaissance’ period. Next see the Orthodox
Patriarchate, the seat of the Orthodox faith.
See the Pantocrator Church, built in 12th
century as the church of the monastery, which bore
the same name. Enjoy Turkish coffe or at a cafe
overlooking the Golden Horn. Finally, see
the Rusthem Pasha Mosque with its beautiful
examples of Turkish tiles.

GALATA

along the Istiklal Street, the heart of the
city’s cultural life with its various cafes,
restaurants, shops, cinemas… See the Church
of St. Antione, a red-brick neo-Gothic
monument run by Franciscan monks. Stroll around
the Galata part of the city, which was a
semi-independent colony of the Genoese, an Italian
marine-state. In the early centuries under the
Ottoman rule, the district became densely
populated as the ‘European quarter’. See the Galata
Tower, known also as the Tower of Christ,
built in 1348. Ascend the galleries for a
magnificent view over the Bosphorus, Golden Horn
and Marmara Sea. Continue walking to the Galata
Mevlevihane, a former monastery and ceremonial
hall of the Whirling Dervishes. A brief stop at Hotel
Pera Palas, used as a residence by the
passengers of the Orient Express, for tea or
coffee.

the imperial mosque complex of Suleyman the
Magnificent, a masterwork of the greatest of the
Ottoman architects, the incomparable Sinan. An
exquisite and as yet unspoiled district with
traditional old wooden Houses.
Eminonu Quarter: Rustem
Pasa Cami'i, Yeni Cami, Spice Bazaar, Fish Market
and Galata Bridge.
